The Wasteland Revisited
When T.S. Eliot published The Waste Land in 1922 he showed us a world that was broken. This was after the First World War. A hundred years later The Waste Land still makes sense to us. We just went through the COVID-19 pandemic. There are still a lot of tensions in the world especially in the Middle East. What T.S. Eliot wrote about back then seems real to us now.
The Waste Land that T.S. Eliot wrote about was a symbol of how empty people felt. Now it looks like that is what the world is really like. The Waste Land is a picture of a world that's empty and sad. T.S. Eliot showed us how people were trying to make sense of things after something bad happened. We just went through a pandemic that showed us how weak our systems are. Our systems, our medical systems and our emotional systems.
The way people felt lost and scared during the pandemic is a lot like how people felt in The Waste Land. Cities were empty and quiet. People were afraid to be around each other. Hospitals were full. Nobody knew what was going to happen next. Like the people in The Waste Land we felt really alone. Both physically and emotionally. We wore masks to protect ourselves. They also made us feel more disconnected from each other.
The pictures that T.S. Eliot drew with his words. Our streets were empty. Our communities were broken. It was really quiet. That was scary. And it is not the pandemic. There are still a lot of conflicts and tensions in the world especially in the Middle East and Iran. This makes it seem like we are living in a wasteland, where there is a lot of instability and violence.
T.S. Eliot did not just think of war as something that destroys things. He thought of it as something that can also hurt our morals and our culture. He showed us a world where people are losing their sense of what's right and wrong and where they are losing their sense of who they are. This is still true today, where there are a lot of disagreements and conflicts in the world. The Middle East is an example of this. It is a place with a lot of history and a lot of conflict.
Even though The Waste Land is a really sad poem it is not all hopeless. At the end of the poem T.S. Eliot says the word "Shanti" which means peace. This gives us a sense that things can get better and that we can find peace again. We saw this during the pandemic, when people came together to help each other. Healthcare workers risked their lives to help others and communities came together to support people who were struggling.
We are still trying to find peace in the world with all the conflicts and tensions. It is not easy. We are trying. What makes The Waste Land so great is that it is a poem that can be understood by people over the world. Even though it was written a time ago its themes are still relevant today. The way the poem is structured. In pieces. Is like a picture of our world. It is a world that is disjointed and uncertain. It is still trying to make sense of things.
In the shadow of the pandemic and all the conflicts in the world T.S. Eliots poem seems like it was predicting what would happen. The wasteland is not something that T.S. Eliot imagined. It is real. We see it in our streets our broken societies and our war-torn regions. The Waste Land also reminds us that even in the darkest times there is always hope for things to get better.
The Waste Land makes us realize that the wasteland is not a physical place. It is a state of mind. It is a place of loss, conflict and brokenness. It is also a place where we can find hope for renewal.
