A Brahma designs! A Vishnu sustains!
A Cinder-grim'd SIVA doth slay!
The dramatist deigns when Durga ordains,
The Trinity's Play to display!
... ... ...
The yellow stragglers of all setting moons
Do linger but to vex a risen Sun!
The Dramatist is a small poem composed by T.P. Kailasam (1884-1946) who is a Kannada dramatist and a poet who writes in Kannada and English. A writer of the British time, Kailasam is humorous and comical. Kailasam as a poet is but a predecessor of A.K. Ramanujan. Here the poet tries to speak the whole spectacle. Who is who of the drama? Whose drama is this ultimately? How to raise the curtain with the auspicious prayer? Without seeking blessings, how to start? Let Brahma Vishnu Maheshwara be with. Here Kailasam tries to delve deep into the Trinity, the Hindu Trinity composed of Brahma Vishnu Maheshwara.
The dramatist classical and celestial and the mundane and theatrical are not same in their art of making. A Brahma designs. A Vishnu sustains it. A Cindar-grim’d Siva slays it. The dramatist can design if it is the wish of Durga. If Durga wishes, it will come to fruition.
A dramatist can just display it the Trinity’s play. The art of drama, how is it professed? A drama has begun, how to finish it? How to seek blessings from the Divine as for accomplish it? The theatre prospers if the stage, the script and the personae work in connivance with. The managers, performers, producers, directors, workers and players, are all parts of the play and have a hand in the success of the plays, we mean the shows shown.
The dramatist can accomplish if he has the blessings of Devi Durga. Only then the things can materialize. As the Holy Trinity creates, preserves and destroys so the blessings of them are required. A risen sun has a grandeur, splendor of its own. But a yellower moonlight of some mellower strain, how can it match with? None can say what it may intervene, intercept in an unwanted way. Let the moments sail by smoothly. Let the auspicious be with lest it be disturbed.
To read the poem is to be reminded of the Trimurti and as he is a playwright of some sort so he would definitely seek for the blessings as it is our tradition, every lay-out we start with the auspicious benediction and how can we without their blessings?
