How long will you sit there crying like this? Get up, get up...! Rise and wash your face! Start cooking. Look how forlorn little Saanvi is. Is this why you gathered all your courage?" said Niharika, consoling Amani, who sat by the dining table weeping with her daughter Saanvi in her lap.
It was eight in the evening. The house felt barren and hollow. There wasn't a single sound in the home except for the weeping. Little Saanvi clung tightly to her mother, gazing at her with frightened, anxious eyes.
Amani wiped her tears.
"It has been a week. There is no trace of Avinash. Whom do I even pour my heart out to??"
Niharika understood. Precisely because she understood, she had come to comfort her and offer some strength.
"I am right here with you! Are the rest of us not here for you? Has the world completely collapsed? There are so many women's organizations. We shall approach them together..." Niharika said soothingly.
Niharika knew the underlying truth. Without reminding Amani of it, she simply reminded her of her immediate duty.
Despite being surrounded by people, Amani had become entirely alone. For the sake of love, she had abandoned her family to marry, which alienated her own parents. Her in-laws, too, had distanced themselves. She had thought Avinash was everything for her. But now, he had walked out of her life. She was a solitary soul with no one left to lean on. Except for this little girl and her modest job, she had absolutely no one to call her own now. As these memories rushed back to her, Amani broke down and sobbed uncontrollably.
"What is the use of dwelling on all this now? What is done is done. Does everyone turn out the same way? These days, even if people love someone from a different caste, parents themselves are stepping forward to solemnizing the marriage. If the children are happy, parents’ consent. Families from both sides visit each other and blend seamlessly. Where do these rigid caste prejudices even exist now? It is just that your parents and your in-laws happened to be that stubborn... not everyone is like them. Knowing they have an only daughter or an only son, parents yield out of concern for their future and perform the weddings according to tradition. Nobody ever anticipated that Avinash would behave like this," Niharika said soothingly, trying to comfort her.
Niharika then took Saanvi and gave her a bath with warm water.
"First, warm up some milk and give her some snacks," Niharika instructed.
Amani began to pull herself together. Having another soul by one's side brings immense strength.
Niharika had a vague inkling of the truth—that Avinash had entangled himself in an affair with another woman and intended to marry her! Such matters are best left unquestioned. Sometimes, it is wiser to feign ignorance despite knowing the truth.
Thus, whenever possible, Niharika stood by Amani and Saanvi as a pillar of support. Saanvi was three years old now and had not yet grown accustomed to school. Amani would drop her off at a day-care center before heading to her duty.

Days rolled by.
Avinash had stopped returning home altogether. Somehow, Amani managed to pay the house rent entirely by herself. Her ATM card was safe in her own hands. She now possessed absolute authority over her earnings. Her right over Saanvi was also absolute and unquestioned. There was no one anymore to dictate how she should look, or what she should cook, no one to boss her around with chores when she returned home utterly exhausted.
Gradually, Amani was adapting to her solitary existence. The joyous freedom of solitude, the delightful antics of Saanvi, and her entire leisure time belonged completely to her now.
Niharika felt immensely pleased witnessing the burgeoning self-confidence in Amani. She discussed Amani's future with her husband, Vijay. They resolved not to interfere meddlesomely in her life, but rather to stand by her as an unwavering pillar of support, whatever her decisions might be. First, they wished to approach her parents and in-laws. After a separation of three long years, the maternal and paternal instincts stirred within them. Their little granddaughter, Saanvi, became the bridge that reunited everyone. They began visiting her frequently.
The broken bonds that Amani had once lost in life were now beginning to sprout anew, bringing her a sense of solace. As the haze of infatuation dissolved, she was finally comprehending the true essence of life... in this new phase, she was discovering a multitude of realities. Two years rolled by. She now stood firmly on her own unique identity. Saanvi had reached the age to attend school.
Eventually, Avinash's whereabouts were uncovered. Amani and Niharika together approached women's welfare organizations and the Women's Commission.
"I do not know who she is. She and I were never married," he claimed cold-bloodedly.
Amani had never imagined that he could stoop to such a vile and despicable level.
The grand declarations of love he had once made while pursuing her echoed vividly in her memory. Though her self-esteem was bruised by such treachery, she stood remarkably resilient. With everyone's collective support, she met a lawyer. The advocate, Rajesh, filed a criminal case in court under Section 498A and other relevant provisions.
Avinash repeated those very same deceptive lies once again. Amani's heart completely shattered completely. A profound sense of disillusionment washed over her. If she was never married to him, then who was Saanvi's father? After thinking it through, Amani resolved that she must fight it out to the bitter end and settle the matter once and for all.
Amani began searching for photographs of their times together. Those pictures, filled with the warmth of their initial intimacy and a deep sense of connection, had never been shown to anyone until now. But now, those tokens of secret embraces, the tender kisses he had pressed upon her belly when she was pregnant with Saanvi, and the blossoming romance vividly recalled the moments they had dreamt together and decided to weave their lives as one.
His words from those bygone days echoed in her mind.
"Ours is pure, unblemished love. Whenever I gaze into your eyes, I truly believe that you are the one I have been searching for. It feels as though you were born solely for me. A life without you is utterly worthless..." Thus flowed his torrential downpour of promises.
He had lectured her endlessly on how to live and what to do if their parents refused to accept their union.
When Amani had pointed out the inevitable challenges that would arise, he was the one who had anchored her with courage. Had her youth faded just three years after Saanvi’s birth? How could his heart alter so drastically? How could he speak such grand, sweeping words back then, only to betray them now?
"Amani! I myself do not know what I truly desire anymore. Perhaps I need to find myself outside the confines of our marriage!"
How could he utter such words now? They had believed their love would endure for eternity. She had never, even in her wildest dreams, anticipated such indifference from him.
Putting a definitive full stop to these haunting memories, she gathered the photographs, took Niharika along, and marched resolutely toward her advocate.

Against the backdrop of their fractured relationship, Amani embarked on a journey of profound self-realization—solitary yet driven by an iron resolve. She traversed paths hitherto unknown to her, enduring a multitude of bitter encounters, piercing taunts, and malicious glares along the way. However, as compassionate strangers turned into loyal friends and guiding lights, her inner strength and social support multiplied. In emotional embraces with Saanvi, their maternal bond deepened; the little girl became the living testament of their erstwhile love. Amani's newfound faith beautifully aligned with her steadfast determination to carve out a luminous future.
In this freshly embraced independence, Amani’s unique self-identity flourished.
Fortified by the unwavering backing of her new allies, she fearlessly launched her legal battles, standing resilient against every adversity.
Witnessing Amani rise to such towering statures of strength, Niharika remarked, "Amani, you are far more powerful than you ever credited yourself to be. Trust in yourself! This struggle will unravel the true depth of your latent potential."
"What you say is absolutely true. I will transcend these tribulations and sculpt a life infused with purpose. That alone is the ultimate happiness for Saanvi and me," Amani replied with conviction.
Meanwhile, Avinash's illusions of self-importance and unyielding arrogance completely evaporated.
Discerning his client's internal turmoil, Avinash's defense counsel offered two distinct courses of action: either to seek reconciliation and plead to restart their domestic life together, or, if that proved unfeasible, to beg for her forgiveness and request her to withdraw the criminal case.
"Avinash! Confronting the absolute truth and seeking forgiveness demands immense courage. Are you truly prepared to mend these shattered bonds and find solace in love once more?"
"I have realized my grave mistake. I deeply yearn to rebuild everything that I have lost," Avinash confessed in a sober tone.
He yearned to reconcile with Amani. However, Amani’s life experiences had evolved entirely. She had transformed in a manner beyond Avinash’s wildest imagination; her life’s journey had forged her into an indomitable woman. The Amani he once knew was no more. The Amani fighting today was entirely a different person.
Bidding farewell to the illusions of the past, Amani wholeheartedly embraced the present. Discovering that Amani had unlocked her own version of happiness, the agony within Avinash’s heart finally subsided.
As the very embodiment of resilience, Amani redefined her entire life. She was now residing with her daughter and her own parents. She was no longer solitary. She had embarked upon a fresh chapter in her existence. She harbored absolutely no desire to listen to the echoes of their past romance. She gracefully molded her roles as a mother, a daughter, and a daughter-in-law. Finding solace at last, she fearlessly accepted the challenges that lay ahead.
Meanwhile, Avinash lost his job. Stripped of all dignity, Avinash went on to file a maintenance case against his own gainfully employed wife.
Amani simply laughed it off. No one knew what had become of that second wife. Feeling a deep sense of triumphant pride over the complete shattering of Avinash’s arrogance, Amani embraced Niharika tightly.
Thus, another three years rolled by in Amani's solitary journey. It was a period filled with a multitude of experiences and relentless struggles. Yet, countless souls stood by her in solidarity.
She had wept bitter tears during her lonely battle. Her parents could no longer bear to witness their only daughter's anguish; their parental instincts were deeply stirred, and they sheltered her protectively once more. Her in-laws, too, harbored immense affection for their granddaughter. After ages, the cheerful laughter of a little child echoed in their household once more. They were utterly enchanted by those innocent smiles. They realized with absolute certainty that it was their son who had gone astray, while their daughter-in-law was righteous. Upon hearing their son’s malicious claim that he was never even married, they grieved intensely, feeling that he was born as a curse to their lineage.
They realized how comforting and blissful life was with their granddaughter around. Thus, they all blended into one unified family. Now, that darling granddaughter had become the very center of their universe. Immersed in her innocent games and laughter, they forgot all past grievances. For Amani, there was struggle in the outside world, but sheer bliss inside her home.
In this brand-new phase of life, Amani learned a great many realities... She remembered how Avinash, having lost his job, had filed a maintenance case against her, only to recently send a word through his lawyer that he was willing to withdraw the case. Recalling this, Amani let out a soft laugh. What had possessed her now to ever welcome him back into her world?
She had absolutely nothing to do with whatever change he claimed to have undergone.
Her life as a single parent was beautiful just the way it was now. Her parents and her in-laws, who had once distanced themselves in the name of inter-caste conflicts, were now living under the same roof as her.
This collective, extended family felt warm and complete. Why should he be allowed to barge into her life all over again? She conveyed the exact same decision to her advocate. The moment she uttered those words, a massive weight seemed to lift off her shoulders, filling her with a surge of vibrant energy... Amani was no longer the fragile woman of the past.
She had blossomed and matured through a myriad of profound life experiences. It was the life of Avinash—the man who had abandoned her—that had withered away into oblivion.
Amani had triumphantly rewritten the script of her own destiny.
Dropping Saanvi off at school on her scooter, she blew her a smiling goodbye, kick-started her vehicle as she did every other ordinary day, and rode away gracefully toward her office.
