My eyes are the expansive halcyon pond
In which your beauty is locked like a moon.
Your voice is the wild forest song,
My ears the wind that bears it far and wide.
My dreams are the trees
And you the shapely shadows they cast.
Your body is the barge on Life’s boisterous seas
My soul the boatman ferrying to the Unknown Shore.
He wrote and we could not feel to know him and if he was not modern, who was he? Kaikini can never be called a poet of the pre-1947 period. He is but a modern poet coming before Nissim Ezekiel and his company.
This poem included in This Civilization collection of P.R. Kaikini is one of the best love poems ever written, but we could not our history, history of poetry. Even our boards of studies could not prescribe it for years. We are sorry to say our study of Indian English poetry starts with Nissim Ezekiel. It starts with Sarojini, but we know it not Edmund linden, Edmund Gosse and Arthur Symons. We recommend Tagore’s Gitanjali, but not Yeats’ Introduction to it as a fine piece of criticism. Who can ever better write than Evelyn Underhill’s Introduction to Songs of Kabira?
This is the poem I had been searching for so long and finally I have got as it pleases me most with its fewer words.
