The Bhang Experience

It was 1980. We had just finished college feeling free and relaxed. Next day was Holi and we were drenched in the fun and frolic of the festival.  We had never used drugs and hardly any alcohol totally unaware of the taste and effect of Bhang.

We gathered at a friend's place in the morning, enjoyed tasty gujhiyaas with thandai and had a wonderful time.... till we realized that Bhang was getting into the system in a very different way. We all ended up with a little more inside than we should have.

A friend actually had to be pulled away from the washbasin when he didn't stop washing his hands for over thirty minutes; another finished two packets of namkeen mixture before he was moved elsewhere in the room. A third had to be taken out of the kitchen where he had gone to taste the food to see if it was good. He didn't stop.

Anyway... in the end we were none the worse for it... and after finishing lunch we all proceeded homewards.  But that was not really the end of it. Not being used to the effects of Bhang, our experience lasted well into the evening, and in some cases into the next day. A friend and I were going to All India Radio for a recording. We were on my motorcycle and it was only after checking the wheels the third time that we realized that there was nothing wrong with the bike, just the riders, who were still suffering with the effect.
