Train Journeys In India, Both A Nightmare &

Delight

I was told to be aware of "chor and chuhae" on the overnight train journey between Chandigarh and Bikaner.

By good luck I did not encounter either a rodent or a thief. Still the cautionary watch kept me overly alert thru out the night. In preparation for that I stacked my two pieces of luggage one over the other on the top sleeping berth I was assigned. And this is where my one-night nightmare began.

The luggage occupied almost half of the hanging sleeping slot. There were no steps to climb up. With some footwork, stepping on the berths in between and across, the monkey jumping was accomplished while irking fellow sleeping lucky ones. And once I reached my penthouse destination and lied with folded legs that I noticed my face was exactly in front of the open air-condition duct.  It was releasing blast of cool air for the comforts of others but quite discomforting for me. There was no way I could close it as the overlapping wooden strips were all broken.

The choice for me was to cover up my face with the thick, perhaps never cleaned blanket, or use it as stuffing insulation to block the air conditioning hole. I selected the latter. And it worked. Still I had to push back the blanket periodically as the cool air blast kept pushing it out.

My sleep was on and off. The ordeal was over as the train reached Bikaner next morning, almost on time.
My second train journey was from Bikaner to Delhi. And it was a delightful experience. The train was amazingly clean and so were the enroute rail stations. Looking thru the window to see the countryside landscape on a sunny day was an involving and joyful ride.
