Pursuit of Happiness

If there is a common goal for all people, it is ”TO BE HAPPY”. The word “happy” is common in most of the Greeting Messages. We say “happy birthday”,  “happy journey”, “happy holidays”, “happy parenting”, happy wedded life”, and so on.

We find quite a bit of literature relating to happiness. We can also find a large number of quotes regarding happiness. But it is difficult to find any common definition. However, there is a general agreement that Happiness is a State of Mind. There is also a consensus that Happiness is a byproduct of some other event. It would be futile to try to define happiness. Albert Camus has said

You will never be happy if you continue to search

for what happiness consists of..

People are also advised not to pursue happiness. People are best advised to pursue their well-defined goals. Here is an interesting quote in this regard by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the American novelist who passed away on this day (May 19) in 1864. This is a very widely used quote.

Let us all be happy without putting extra effort to be so.

Comment A very well documented note.
But may I take the liberty to add:
When one seeks happiness in worldly things, there is always doubt about success. And if there is success, the happiness is momentary. Because, now we set for ourselves newer goals. Beyond happiness is a quality of the soul - Joy and Bliss. Even while doing all the worldly things, one must learn the art of staying contended within - A higher state of mind.
Bhagwad Gita defines Yoga as "Balanced Life" - "Samatva Bhav Yoga Uchyate".
