Before you start to read this article, which will either totally bore you out or make you change the way you think, just answer one question. There’s no right or wrong, it’s just to get a glimpse or idea.
How much time does it take for you to search for a movie?
No, seriously, I’m not joking. Like watching a movie at dinnertime, by the time we finally find a good show, the dinner’s finished!
Isn’t it really boring to just keep scrolling on, and on, and on and not really finding anything worth seeing?
It makes watching a movie more like an effort rather than fun. In the end we watch something just because we can’t find anything else. (“arre, chalo firse dekh lete hain, aur kucch hain nahi dekhne ko”)
That’s mainly because we’re spoilt by too much choice.
I’ve been told by my father that when he was young, there was just one channel on TV, which played for a short period of time. But, even though it was sometimes really boring or dull, they still had to enjoy it.
Same with food. When they used to go at a restaurant, everyone would order one dish and eat it happily, whether it was their favourite dish or not.
But now, everyone orders different dishes of their personal liking and eat that, so we can’t try anything new and just stick to that one thing every time. (“mujhe daal pasand hai to main to vo hi khaungi, aur kucch nahi”)
How does this affect us then? Isn’t it better that we have a variety to choose from and we can have whatever we want?
Well, the downside is that when given 10 options, we can’t think of the best one.
We don’t get to enjoy what we’re doing and are too busy thinking about what we’re missing in the other 9.
Instead of enjoying what we have, we spend too much time thinking about what we don’t have. And that makes us less happy. Too many choices make us confused and anxious, and we start doubting our decisions.
So a lot of choice can be a good thing, yes, but everything that shines isn’t gold.
Nothing is a surprise then if you can just choose everything in life. If everything just goes our way, then what’s new?
This reminds me of a quote by the great Mr. Ratan Tata,
“Ups and downs in life are very important to keep us going, because a straight line, even in an ECG, means we are not alive”
If nothing’s surprising or unexpected, what’s even exciting in life….
…as sometimes, less is more.
