Assassination Attempts on Trump

The Repeatedly Failing Shield  – An Analysis of Failures

The recent news of assassination attempts on current US President Donald Trump is causing a global sensation. A fresh shooting incident took place on April 25, 2026, at the White House Correspondents' Dinner held at the Washington Hilton. With this, a total of three direct, life-threatening attempts have now occurred, including the 2024 Pennsylvania rally and the Florida golf course incident. These events bring back memories of attacks on John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan in American history. What this clearly indicates is that the country’s internal security system continues to display the same kind of weaknesses. This essay offers a critical analysis of these security and intelligence failures.

Security Failures: Evident Gaps:

The most severe attack on Trump took place on July 13, 2024, at the Butler rally. There, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks climbed onto a rooftop barely 150 yards from the president and opened fire with an AR-15 rifle. This incident exposed the biggest vulnerability in the history of the US Secret Service (USSS). According to Senate committee reports, the security arrangement was a “complete breakdown.” Allegedly, local police had identified a suspicious person with a rangefinder and relayed that information to the USSS more than 25 minutes before the attack, yet no proper action was taken. The command center at the event site failed to pass this critical information to Trump’s personal security detail.

A GAO report released by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley stated that the USSS knew about a specific threat against Trump ten days before the attack. However, due to the lack of a clear policy to share this information with local partners, the warning could not be intercepted. Even after security changes were made following the Hinckley attack on Reagan, the fact that another individual could breach security with weapons at the same Hilton hotel reveals an unchanged flaw in the system.

Intelligence Failures- Information Available, Response Missing:

Another major failure in these attacks lies with the intelligence system. Reports have identified the “siloed information” problem within the USSS as a key issue. Due to a lack of proper coordination with the Chief of Staff or local police, there was a clear failure in profiling potential attackers. Despite incidents involving Ryan Routh in Florida in September 2024 or threats made by an undocumented immigrant in May 2025, pre-event screening processes continued to show severe loopholes. Furthermore, despite threats of chemical weapons (ricin letters) from Iran-affiliated groups and domestic sources, intelligence agencies failed to properly assess the severity of those threats. Even when information existed, delays occurred in converting it from a “potential risk” to an “active threat” and taking timely action.

International Media Responses:

Global leaders reacted strongly to the latest shooting. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that “violence has no place in democracy” and expressed relief at Trump’s safety. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu strongly termed the incident an “assassination attempt.” French President Macron and Indian Prime Minister Modi also expressed concern over the incident. These responses show how sensitive the world has become to American political violence.
