From Spectacle to Satsang

This Diwali, we began by contemplating an extravagant spectacle of fireworks that demanded attention. What followed was a conversation that invited participation. And somewhere along the way, the conversation became a journey of discovery — a Satsang.

An explosion announces its presence. It dazzles, excites, and disappears, often leaving behind little more than an echo. Stillness, on the other hand, announces nothing. Yet it offers something that noise seldom can, the opportunity to observe, reflect, and understand.

From stillness emerges inquiry. A question invites another, an experience awakens a memory, and a memory becomes an occasion for sharing.

Consider a grandfather reading a book with his grandchildren. The book provides the beginning, but the conversation soon travels beyond its pages. The grandfather shares what life has taught him; the grandchildren respond with their curiosity. Neither knows where the conversation will lead.

And perhaps that is its beauty. There is no compulsion to teach, no obligation to learn, and no pressure to agree. Affection brings them together; curiosity keeps them engaged. Understanding unfolds naturally, without anyone needing to assert authority or prove anything. Understanding is not a possession to be handed from one generation to another. It unfolds through listening, questioning, and discovering together.

The grandfather may have opened the book believing he had something to share. He may close it having discovered something himself.

And the reader, quietly joining the grandchildren, becomes another participant.

From spectacle to stillness, from stillness to understanding, and from understanding to sharing.

What began as an explosion demanding attention has become a conversation inviting participation.

And the Satsang continues.
