Other day I was talking to one of my colleagues over office intercom on some official matter. He hails from Rajasthan and we were talking in Hindi. Suddenly he commented that my Hindi is very good, probably one of the best among his non-Hindi speaking friends. Naturally, I felt very good for this appreciation or recognition.
Now, the question is what is the value of this recognition and what is its effect on a common person. To me it is of great value. In a normal middle class family set up how many members do get any kind of award in recognition for any service or quality. How many winners of Padmashree, Padma Bhushan or Jnanpith or Magsaysay, Sahitya Academy Awards we know personally or we have as our family members? Probably the answer would be none. The moments of joy and happiness make us dear to our near ones. 

Many years back, during one official discussion, my then superior praised me profusely in front of other more senior officials about my drafting of some official document. Till date I remember that vividly, fondly. That was one of the greatest compliments I have ever received. I am sure all of us have many such moments of glory, memories of which we cherish for our entire life.

It is this simple recognition which provides fuel to our desire to live life. A simple word of appreciation or recognition makes wonder in one’s life. We all love to be appreciated. We should also know to appreciate others. So I think, to be appreciated one should try to appreciate others. What do you say?

Comment Very  True!  HRD  managers   are taught  to rebuke a subordinate by eulogising him first  in respect of his positive aspects  before pointing out his negative aspects.  Praises can inspire a person to give his best and therefore an organisation stands to benefit from   this tactic. But  do we really  care?
