The Man Who Saw the Sky

How Manohar Parrikar’s Vision Shielded India from a Storm

Why is India sleeping peacefully tonight, even as missiles and drones scream across its borders? What stopped enemy fire from raining destruction on our military bases and civilian lives? And more importantly — who had the foresight to shield a billion lives from a night of terror?

The answer lies not in just radar systems and interceptor missiles, but in the sheer clarity and conviction of a man who is no longer with us — Manohar Parrikar.

On the night of May 7 and 8, Pakistan launched a coordinated aerial barrage, firing a swarm of missiles and drones across India’s northern frontier. Their targets were precise: military bases in Jammu, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. But their strategy collapsed before it even began.

The reason? A steel shield in the sky — India’s S-400 Triumf air defence system, dubbed by the Indian Air Force as the modern-day Sudarshan Chakra. Like the celestial weapon of Lord Krishna in the Mahabharata, the S-400 intercepted enemy threats mid-air, neutralizing them with clinical precision.

Not a single projectile hit its target. Not a single Indian life was lost.

The Shield Forged by a Statesman

To understand how India achieved this level of preparedness, one must journey back nearly a decade. In 2016, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, an engineer at heart and a nationalist by spirit, initiated a deep transformation in India’s air defence strategy.

He posed difficult questions: Could India defend itself against a simultaneous multi-front aerial attack? Was our short- and medium-range missile coverage enough in an era of long-range threats? Would investing in longer-range systems give us fewer headaches and more security?

Under his direction, the Air Force conducted a comprehensive review. The conclusion was staggering: With a long-range platform like the S-400, India would need fewer MR-SAMs and SR-SAMs, reducing complexity and increasing efficiency. Parrikar wasn’t just buying missiles — he was future-proofing the nation.

The Birth of India’s ‘Sudarshan Chakra’

The S-400 Triumf, built by Russia, is capable of engaging up to 80 targets simultaneously at ranges up to 600 kilometers. Whether it is a stealth jet, cruise missile, or armed drone, the S-400 neutralizes threats before they even come into Indian airspace.

India procured five squadrons of this system at a cost of $6.1 billion, and the first three arrived by 2021. Positioned along the northern and western borders, they now serve as India’s most formidable aerial defence layer.

When these interceptors struck Pakistani missiles mid-air on May 7–8, the sky above India was transformed into a battlefield — and India won.

Parrikar vs Pressure: India First, Always

But this was not an easy acquisition. The United States, under both Donald Trump and Joe Biden, lobbied fiercely against the S-400 deal. The threat of sanctions under CAATSA (Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act) loomed large. Yet, Parrikar stood firm. He wasn’t swayed by power games. His allegiance was to India’s sovereignty, not to geopolitical appeasement.

He knew that strategic autonomy demanded tough choices — and today, his decision has saved countless lives.

A Legacy That Saved a Nation

At a time when Pakistan, backed by Chinese ammunition and Turkish rhetoric, is escalating tensions, India’s readiness is not just reactive — it is strategic. The S-400 is more than a missile system. It is a silent guardian. A force multiplier. A living testament to one man’s belief that no price is too high for national security.

Final Reflections: What Are We Doing to Build the Next Parrikars?

Are we honoring visionaries like Parrikar only in hindsight? Who in today’s leadership is thinking beyond their term and planning for the next decade? Are we as a nation doing enough to build leaders who prioritize national interest above international validation?

India was shielded not just by iron and electronics, but by the foresight of a man who refused to blink. In a world full of talkers, Manohar Parrikar acted — and his vision now protects over a billion lives.
