Postojna Caves are part of the Park Postojnska Jama Complex, which offers a spectacular view of the natural caves, making it the best tourist attraction in Slovenia. The caves have been created by dropping water droplets over the rocks over a long period of time and creating these nature’s wonders. Postojna Caves boast of towering mountains, unique vegetation, murmuring rivers and vast subterranean halls creating a unique, memorial trip.

The story of Postojna Caves goes back millions of years. These are one-of-a-kind majestic natural complete with underground galleries and halls with a myriad of stalactites, stalagmites. The stalactites are the formations that hang down from the cave ceiling, while stalagmites grow up from the cave floor. Additionally, it is also the home of a number of mysterious animal species as endemic olm, which is slimy looking cave dweller, and entirely aquatic.

A unique railway train takes you to the caves from the ticket gates. These trains have been operating since 1872 AD, and they travel a distance of 3.5 KM to the termination point from the gate. After we arrive at the destination, we are free to explore the caves sprawling 1.5 KM at our own pace. Some of the caves are three to five meters tall.

The water dripping over the rock formations makes the inside temperature around 10o C, and if we are not carrying warm clothes by the time the tour is completed it feels as if we were in a freezer for the duration of the tour. A fantastic web of tunnels, passages, galleries and halls, along with easy access makes them most popular with tourists. The pictorial images are the lifelong souvenir of the visit.

Comment Beautiful description and pictures of the caves. Reminds me of our visit to the extraordinary Carlsbad Caverns National Park. I found that although the pictures we took were nice, they could not do justice to the actual beauty viewed by the eyes. I am guessing it was the same for these caves.
