A Visual Event

The evening sky is as wide as the universe,
its smoky cloud arrays against the furnace red,
blackening progressively the dark green foliage;

the dying light quickly picked up in local bursts,
street lights, forecourt blazes, countless window squares,
the traffic’s luminous symbols.

It must be light opens up our sight in definition;
the sun stirred up vegetation to receive its light;
the eye slowly formed to capture its lighted forms.

And so acclimatized, man projects his own light
to bring to definition the countless works of his hands,
by day somewhat shrunk, but by night entire cities.

The pleasurable sunlight from a fanatical sun,
it occasions such ecstasies for vision, endows
its blazing orb with the subtleties of sight;

the same that in man’s dull and moistened eyeballs
tansfers sunlight’s wide and incalculable extent,
providing backup in its absence; the universe

a visual event.
