Theme: Individuality

Individuality

We each of us sets great store
by our individuality.

The generality of conception
of who we are
is something we fight against
as did the spermatozoa.

At birth our cry is that of life,
the naming individualizes,
the child we are
distinguishes in the school.

The named self belongs
not merely to us
but to all those we know,
as the individual they know.

From acquaintanceship to fame
we begin to live in others
by virtue of what
we are certainly not all about.

In time, our individuality
comes to exceed us,
a vicarious life in others
outlasting our own.

In the life hereafter
we are as we are known,
nothing hidden,
in the individuality of God.
