Reluctant Escape

A long grimy street in Liverpool, every shop was boarded up
for sale signs falling off their frames. A bus trundled by it was
empty safe for an old couple sitting staring into the past.
85 shops, five cafes and a cinema, each one, a broken dream,
hard work and pride. But the factories that employed people
who could spend money here closed down, gone to China,
it was said or somewhere else’s foreign place.

I had a reason to walk this long street’s dusty pavements,
once I had a cafe here, it was called “Tasty Toaster,”
but when the new government declared war on workers,
I lost my costumers and could not pay the bank. But life is
strange, had I not gone broke I would have been stuck here
running a cafe, and not seen the wonders I have seen on
foreign shores. Yes, adversity made me lucky.
