The Poetry Mongers

Give me the image,
The metaphor, the miracle.

Rise above pretensions
And opinions
To voice a concern,
To express grief,
To represent a yearning.

Show me something
That can claim the universe!

Give me a leaf,
A bird, a raindrop,
A bud, a flower,
A blade of grass,
A dangling spider,
A circling eagle
And carry it through
A denouement.
 
No maudlin sentiment please!
No interminable explanation
No rambling epic.
The Japanese and the Chinese
Aren’t interested,
Neither am I!
 
Speak through the
Fulgent silence
If you can,
Or relinquish
The calling!
