The Art of Living

Two decades ago
she had come to my office
and ruled roost.
Who brought her
fell out of grace
from still higher
and had to leave.
But before that
the lady and the gentlemen
parted ways.
The gentleman checkmated me,
getting swelled
by the lady and the ilk
he fostered.

The lady had some sympathy for me.
But at some point of time
I gave up professional arms
and made room for the lady's generation
and settled for a sideline existence,
for you should never quarrel
with the younger generation.
I learned a philosophy of existence
as a substitute of professional existence.

But when the curtain is about to fall
on my professional existence,
she comes to me
and says,
Sir, I am leaving
for down South
as my children are growing,
as my husband keeps away
most part of every week,
and as our parents are aging
and we need to be near them.

The lady made many a heart leap,
broke many a heart,
and she and her ilk
hastened my professional end.
But, here and now,
we exchange our mobile numbers,
wish each other happy futures,
and part.

Life, you chart our path
unforeseen
only to teach the art of living,
though sometimes brutal.
