End of the Way

When I was walking along the way
I met many
But at the end of the journey
I find only two of us now – it’s just we!
Seasons have come and gone
Days have passed
I wrote many things –
On my way I met many.

I was not aware where my way came to its end
When evening came
Looking back I find
All have left
When I came to your lonely home
I was surprised to see
New songs were coming to my mind
I didn’t know where my way ended
And when evening came.

Have the tears left their traces in my tired eyes?
What happened on the long way
Are they written on my face?
You have closed all windows
And spread a lovely bed
In the light of your evening lamp
Here only stand we
Do you see the traces of tears in my tired eyes?

Translation of ––Samapti - the concluding poem of the collection Kshanika by Rabindranath Tagore.
