Earth's Significance

Of what significance can this earth be
in the universe! – I have heard it argued;
yet, around it, in all directions see
insignificance in crush of stars, you’d

fit in a single glance; and then be told
they are worlds bright and vast beyond compare,
in some celestial view that does behold
the entirety - ours! – not God’s, for there

the argument would fail: the Infinite
is not impressed, creates it as a concept
formed in man’s mind of Being without limit,
to thus accommodate its virtual limit-

less extent, therein the sole significance;
and earth the podium of enlightenment;
until the bold Enlightenment of science
saw earth as a speck in the firmament.
