More Than a Lost Boot

The German infantryman
Currently residing
With considerable reluctance
In the damp hell of Stalingrad;

Had made enormous strides lately;

To rescue his boot from the muddy jaws
Of the rain soaked riverbank.

So pre-occupied was he that
His single functional ear
Never even heard;
The piercing sound of the
Bullet with his name inscribed.

This riverbank;

Had sucked more than this
Soldier's boot away.
