On Being Shot

In our human world, there is no abruptness
like the action of a gun, a gentle squeeze
converts to, hitting and dropping at once
the human target in its separate world
of life values, smooth continuity,
cleanly wrapped, everything functioning, to
be shot – let us use the word – in the language
of metal, rounded like a word, abusive
beyond nature, while crashing into it
like no hate, a flash and a bark, then one
chaos, internal systems smashed, or as
one sees in gunshot victims, one becomes one’s not.
