Drowning

  I swim upward through treacle
Clawing for a holdfast
On some higher vantage point
imagined but unattained.

I used to see my way ahead,
You did that for me,
Buoying me up
when my heart sunk low.

I gasp for each breath,
Struggle into each moment,
Stagger at each step
As my reluctant heart beats again.

To know you was to live,
To love you was to fly,
To be with you was my cause,
Losing you will begin my end.
