  I, in white sari,
white hair,
sit and watch.

Confined to
city flat
seventh floor,
the world I behold
from the balcony.

Buses, cars,
deafening horns,
maddening speed'
Men and women
in jeans, kurtas
treading fast'
Kids, in uniforms,
hurrying past'

Day after day,
I sit and watch.

Discovered a mate
in white
on the terrace opposite.
Like souls!

I waved my hand,
he wagged his tail.
