  Don’t scream
and let yourself loose
to the clutches of your abductor.

Lie still and imagine
the heat of cotton field,
the weight of cane loading
and the slush you get
in the paddy season.

Hold your breath
and think what would
happen if your father
lost his tillers right.

Let a few nights fall
he’ll get over your pretty face
and allow you to limp back home,
heavy with the thought of Ram,
if it’s a boy.

*Seeta: A Kohli girl of Sindh.
