Theme: Unity

Now at One

If everything is as it could not other-
wise be – tell me, does this not undermine
the forethought that composes every word
and action? - more carried forward than planned?

One thing’s for sure, it’s only in the now
that all events coincide, even the past
and future are scenery of the now;
clearly, the now that continues to be.

The perfection of the now in all things
is distracted by the notion of what
is possible, whereby we then appear
to stand at the helm in the now’s domain.

Yet we are lifted even as we speak
and act, wherever we are it’s the now
we surface on in the identified
present – where all is enacted, at one.

Comment 'Now at One' as against 'Now as One', and in the last line ' - where all is enacted, at (as) one'. The possible use of 'as' is colloquial, and would appear to make sense in the context of the poem. The choice of 'at' sounds off-key, but it is more assertive, as, for example, to say, 'We are all as one in our opinion' as compared with, 'We are all at one in our opinion'. In the poem, all events are 'at one' in enactment, an underlying purpose lacking in 'as one', which implies only similarity.
