Often in nightly silence when
Field crickets rise in chorus
The past visits with trepidation
Holding forth opportune images

Throbbing in inky freedom
Memory takes you unwittingly
To a half-forgotten world
Of faces, voices and contours

Collapsing anxieties within
The comfort of an interrogated past
Winging through dreams and desires
Into some intangible future

And you wake up to a chirpy morning
Searching for the assurance of the past
The promise of an elusive future
Within the onomatopoeia of the day
