Oh Birds!
Oh Dreams!
So early in the morning
Don’t come to our home!
The unrolled Bistar is not even removed
However much I fidget and turn to any side
Whole night sleep evaded me

Standing without
Those who knock---
Are you King's Men?
Or servants of Yama?
Whoever it is who came
Allow me some time.

None of the children have yet grown enough
Very young they are!
My poetry
My silence
Kids that they are, unable to understand!

To continue to live
I shall teach them a little love
Their tender palms
I would kiss and come

Give me just this one opportunity.

Poem by Asharaju, Telugu poet.
Translation by Gopalam (Vijayagopal)
