There is an unusual circumstance in
Our world today, the exponential rise
In population everywhere; and no
Check, ah! – save that self-imposed by science.
For to science we owe exponential
Growth, in a chequered history of man’s
Susceptibility to, it seems, the whim
Of fate – mostly explained as lack of science.
Wars aside, these continue as a threat
To life, much scaled down in the nuclear age,
Disease has in timely swathes irrespective
Of human expectation, cut down numbers.
But science wiped out in stages the threat
Of the invisible, restoring faith
In human life’s longevity and worth;
Not quite, as fire, flood, and virus rage.
