Jaggery Sellers

They come with winter
And make our street home
By hanging tarpaulin over their heads.

Plastic jars filled with dark-brown molasses,
Or golden-brown jaggery in the shape of
Beach balls and bricks wrapped in papers
Circle the peasants.

Barren couples with long hair,
Old boys and their good girls,
Homecoming passers-by for a while
Rub shoulders with the weedy sellers
And part with lighter feet.
