When a roach suddenly appears
and as instantly disappears
spray can at hand
you sleep uneasy
through the night

Next morning,
birdsongs awaken you
and the few potted plants
on your balcony greet you
with blossoms pink and yellow

You realise you are not alone
callers...unwanted/unwelcome
colours...bobbing cheerfully
broadening your smiles
are your companions

Every shadow on the
floor makes you edgy
while flowers make you sing
and birds’ chirps lighten your heart
you begin to understand paradoxes

Grief and delight, light and shadow
sun and rain, joy and sorrow
life and death, day and night
laden skies and rainbows —
you learn the art of living
