Envy None

Many times I used to envy some
Had I been like him
Had I have the brain and brawn
Had I have the wealth and name
Had I have the talent and fame
Had I have his likes and dislikes
Had I have the family like him
Had I have the friends like his
Had I could travel like him
Had I could speak like him
Had I could have a home like him
Had I been popular like him
Yes. It is envy and a craze
To get into the shoes of someone else
How nice it would have been?
Really? Asks my inner voice
I blink. It says ‘You will not be.’
I ask ‘Why?’
‘Stupid’, it says ‘If you were in his shoes
It will bite you, because his foot and gait are
Different from yours.’
‘Yes,’ I feel. I can only be me.
A man who keeps envying others.
