Rambling through the woods,
hypnotized by towering giants -
tall, taller, and the tallest,
which have endured wind,
rain, squalls and storms.
The sun strains
to reach the dim forest floor.
Fleeting warblers, song sparrows,
silent tree creepers, shy wrens, and
the raucous screech of a Steller’s jay
are the few voices in the dense green hush.
Squeals of admiration and delight
echo along the trails.
Who would believe their origin began
from a single grain, which
multiplied again and again?
Action replay of life clinging to life,
Columns clinging onto their families.
Species thrive, driven by instinct
to endure; their symbiotic bond
has nurtured them for millions of years.
Long after the parent has gone,
the offspring rise
with greater gusto and glory.
Human pride stands humbled.
Can one leave behind
a legacy worthy of standing tall -
as the Sequoia, where differences, dangers,
disappointments and drudgery rule?
