A child, held with love
learns to let go—
 
to stand, to walk,
and enter the world
without fear.


Didn’t she hold me so!

A child afraid
of being left
learns to cling—

to a group,
an ism, a promise
of belonging.
 
And spends a lifetime
holding on to
whatever whispers:

You are one of us.

The irony—

Those securely held
learn to let go;

Those left afraid
may never dare to.
