Dear Mr. Dawkins

  Dear Mr. Dawkins, let me say, from the outset,
I have read all your books, and seen you
Life-size, and correspondingly diminutive
In scale to the one you would bring down --
Almighty God. Your small unmusical voice
Makes a patter typical of one of those members
Of a specialized species, the scientists,
With Atheism as its code of survival;
And doing quite well, it would seem: the
Outcome of natural selection, by your own
Admission, for intellectual persons: Nature
Herself having raised you against God.

Just so the chimps gabble among themselves,
Who do not heed the speech and deeds of man
As proof of their inferiority; they are godless too;
As are all creatures performing the species act,
The lions for all their freedom in the wild
Have no concept of prayer and thanksgiving;
Nor too the myriad species of birds
with decorative plumage and song. And trees
Have no minds at all, much less, sky and ocean.
They are all in your opinion evolved forms
In one great process, which begs only
A simple question: how do they move
From one moment to the next? At least,
The person of faith can answer that one.
