Sunrise at Rameshwaram

The crimson orb rises
Excruciatingly. The sea-sky
Wears bright vermillion
Waves rise and then break
Against middle-aged torsos
Of salvation-seeking sea-bathers.
Nala's stones float effortlessly
On the willing sea

(If skeptics doubt it, we have empirical proof here ,sir)

Sri Rama stood at this very spot
And threatened the unyielding sea
With a twang of his bow
Here he watched the sun rise
(Unless dark clouds rose from the east
And devoured the orange sun)
Yonder lay Sri Lanka, the evil
Abode of the ten-headed Ravana.

At the Gujarat lodge you get
Tasteful food for twenty five rupees
The conches are cheap and come
With your name written on them.
Such pretty brittle conches.
The fish in Sri Rama's kund
Do not eat worms and plankton
These divine fish eat
Flaked rice offered by devotees.

The temple corridors
Exquisitely embellished
Stretch endlessly into time
Stone-maidens carry sooty
Oil-lamps with flickering flames
Hanuman's linga arrived late
Sita 's own improvised linga
Had to be installed in order
Not to miss the muhurtam.

A monster cyclone blew off
The Dhanushkodi railway station
The killer-cyclone took all-
Train ,station and people.
Fishermen went missing
In the choppy seas
A lone train now chugged
On the Pamban bridge.

Ancient Rameshwaram sea
Abode of our ancestors
Timeless Rameshwaram sea
On the other shore of time stood
Maryada Purushottama Sri Rama
