The Meaning of Christmas

Christmas springs from intellection
the decorations and lights
glittering costumes
of its spirit in its season.

We are taken by storm
unresisting, a part of time
that swells these fantasies
with the force of ages.

At twelve o'clock, Christmas Eve,
Churches begin
the ceremony of Christ's birth
inescapably of time.

The Christmas Season passes
decorations, gifts, festive fare
transmute to the mundane
the birth embraces.
