  O ye river vast!
Since the beginning of time
Your invisible waters
Silently, ceaselessly flow.
By its formless devastating pace
Pulsates the empty space
And struck by its destructive blow
Like your frothy foams
Matter rises,
From the rushing darkness
Light breaks up
Into myriad colors like streams,
In the layers of your eddies
The sun, the moon and the stars
Revolve like bubbles.

Like a mendicant lass you are bondless
You travel towards no goal
Your journey is like a soundless song of the way.
Does the endless far
Call you always
And its love that spells only ruin
Has made you a homeless wayfarer?
In that wild tryst
Your necklace, pendant on your breast
Again and again swings
And like its gems scatter the stars.
Your disheveled hair
Streaming in a storm
Casts a shadow in space
And your earrings flicker in lightning,
Your loose dress slips
On shivering grass
On the restless flowers and foliage
In woodlands
From the trays of your seasons
On the dusts of the way
Again and again the flowers shed.

In great speed, at a wild pace
You only move on and rush
Back you don't look
Throwing away whatever you have
You collect nothing, nothing you store
Neither you mourn nor are you ever afraid
In the joy of traveling ahead
You spend everything
That sustains you on your way.

You empty yourself the moment you are full
And it keeps you always unpolluted and pure.
Touched by your feet
The dusts of this world
Never remains dirty '
Life emerges out of death every minute
Even if for a moment
Tired, you stall
The world will suddenly brought to a jarring stop
By heaps of matter
Accumulated like hills '
Like a barricade
Everything deformed
Lacking limbs, deaf and dumb
Will bar the way of all
Even the minutest atoms
Will become immobile and sick
Under the weight of their impurities
In a paroxysm of accumulations
In the vast space
The core of all creations will be pierced.

O you dancer like a heavenly dancing girl
You are beautiful yet remain unseen
Your dance like a heavenly fountain
Cascading day and night
Is forever purifying the world
Bathing it in a shower of death
Keeping in endless purity
And in an endless glitter
The vast azure sky.

Your ceaseless dance
The swirl of the borders of your dress
Swirling around your waist
Your fleeting feet
Their free and wanton steps
Have moved the poet
In an ecstasy wild
But not many know
Hearing in your pulse
The echoes of restless footfalls
Your heart resonates
In your blood dance the waves of the seas
And the waving treetops of the woods;
And all these brings to my mind '
Through ages I have passed
Silently shedding again and again
From form to form
From life to life;
Day and night what I got
I spent in my songs and gifts.

Now you behold, my heart,
The same tide has risen again
Your boat is trembling
Whatever you gathered
Whatever you garnered on the shore
Leave it behind
Don't look back
May the call coming from ahead
Suck you in that grand flow
From your noisy past
Into fathomless darkness
Into endless light.

Translation of poem 8 from the collection Balaka by Rabindranath Tagore. It is entitled Chanchala in the compilation Sanchayita. The original is at http://www.rabindra-rachanabali.nltr.org/node/12151
