It's not that you don't want them
or they aren't there any more.
The big, red, shiny apples with a tag
'American' from cold storage
are still there on the shelves.

Like some gaudy neon sign-boards
from a land where big is beautiful
they compete
with the flood of mangoes.

The perfectly shaped, luscious Alphanso
seated amongst Kesar, Badam
and other lesser known locals
is already here ' hot
as the latest Bollywood release.

Like the brightly attired village belle
parading in a folk dance sequel
against the backdrop of city girls
it stands out as special.

The market for once
is catering to the aboriginal.
