The Twilight Song

At the dawn of my life
Those who brought music to my mind
One by one they are fading
Behind the evening shadows.
Along the way
Many are coming and going
I am sitting all alone by its side.
Those who have left
Are coming back and crowding
At the door of my dreams
My past pains
Are seeking in their single strings
The tunes they lost long ago.
Hours pass after hours
I am counting the silent sounds of the beads
The gathering darkness is telling.

Translation of the love song ' Jara bihan-belay gan enechhilo ' composed by Rabindranath Tagore on 3rd November, 1940, a few months before his death. The original with its swaralipi or notation may be seen at http://www.rabindra-rachanabali.nltr.org/node/6579.
