The Losing Game

If you join us with the losers
We know we won’t win
We will accept our loss
Yet this game we won’t give up.
Some will rise, some will fall
Some will survive, some will succumb
May be we will die
Yet this losing game we will keep up.

We won’t play without a stake
Putting in everything we have
We will play like a prince
Even if your call will mean our ruin
We will play to our last farthing
Thereafter we won’t care
If forever we are lost.

Yet this loss is not the ultimate thing
The game will go on
Who can tell
In the end
Who has lost or who has won?
We shall follow you
Playing this losing game
Like a knife with our loss
We shall cut all our bonds
We shall give ourselves to the last
We will never give a thought
What you will do next.

Translation of the poem Har from the collection Kheya (The Ferry) by Rabindranath Tagore. The original is at http://www.rabindra-rachanabali.nltr.org/node/10681
