A Dog Barking

The distant barking of a dog
On a cold December night
Opens a picture book of leftovers,
A finely textured world of fragile beauty,
Of what remains after life is lived
But when you take the mountain path,
In the shadow of school buildings,
Libraries and theaters you come across
A world still communicating to each other
Like lighthouses on a foggy morning.
