What is the color of pain?
Not the black and blue of blows
Nor the red of blood that streaks
when switchblades slash

The color of pain is
the color of indifference
that makes me non-existent
as you swish past
in your cars and flashy bikes

It is the color of arrogance
when I extend
my bony arm for alms
as the red in your eyes
ignores the red of welts on me

It is the color of derision
in your sneer as you
look past those forced
into the world of
organized begging

I can splash innumerable
colors on society’s canvas…
they will not make a Picasso
a Van Gogh or a Monet
They will all blend
into that one edgeless
color of pain
