Humility

When great tragedy befalls one, it is
at a moment's notice; for that reason
it is kind, imposed dispassionately,
and is the rare occasion
one's suddenly made aware that all
this time total control was an illusion,
one is manipulated in one's own witness,
bent and twisted to where one would not go,
yet strangely going, undergoing
submission, which makes one humble.

Humility - the word has to be experienced
to be understood; strangely, it liberates:
the who one was before in tatters
before the who one is that matters, the broken
yet restored to fullness of being, absorbing
the human condition in every face one sees
that one had not seen before,
there to find sweetness, all barriers to vanish.
