Theme: Unity

A Paperweight

Now take this room, and on this table place
a paperweight; then invite them in,
one by one, each man that represents
a nation, a following, a great religion.

Ask nothing more than what is required
for the exercise: 'What do you see?'
And hear each one reply: 'A paperweight.'
Dull, unexciting, but all in that agree.

Now open the door, and let all depart
contented each man with his belief,
and each belief that includes the part
a paperweight has put into relief.

It's only what's clear each will declare,
and it's the only hope for unity;
the irony is that it's always there
here in the semblance of disunity.
