Poem before Christmas

There is a new birth, this time is gravid,
in the offing: the womb is here, the formed
child kicks within its confines, its darkness,
and does not know the outside is its home.

But the womb will move, it will deliver:
perforce the babe will gasp air and know light,
and develop in this happiness like
everything else that rises to morning.

Yes, this certainty is what paves the way
from the humblest beginnings to the dawn
of God, what formed the angels, the dreadful
stages of the Universe, and Jesus:

and I am not abandoned in a time
which bears me forward to this conclusion.
