Luck

Luck is almost human, the way
it intervenes like a bodily presence,
to slip you a note of its own currency
or take from you the same.

Luck is the gambler’s genie
it operates the card packs more acutely
than meets any eye, choosing
who wears its mantle, whom to destroy.

Luck makes life’s turning points
to up and scream for joy, or strike
a sudden discord, its hand
is recognised, almost the hand of God.
