A big day
Statues of heroes were washed clean of the city dust
The whitest of the white costumes
Were worn for the show
Flags were being unfurled
The leaders of the city spoke about the Republic
Not far away from this frenzy
A frail pair of ears could hardly hear it all
The pair of legs which once blazed a trail
Now could hardly make their way
Her mouth now toothless
Once spoke up for independence
And her heart swelled with happiness and liberty
But today she lies old and sick
Languishes and starves in penury
Yearns for her final freedom
