On The Run

I am alive and twenty years today
Thanks to my mother’s defiance of family force
To destroy me, a female, while in her womb
A string of movements across our land she undertook
To avoid being done away with
I’m so proud to be her daughter
I’m spreading the news of her strength and will power
To see me through thick and thin
Now that my aliveness is spread through the media
I’m sure respect, responsibility and relationships will emerge
From quarters unknown
Hip hip hurray to the girl child
