Dredging up the past is no way
to face the future: for it is your future
that’s at stake – not the literary sway
of dead heroes, dredged up from this time’s river.
The present is a short time compared to
the past, but it squeezes in phantoms of
hundreds and thousands of years past into
your mind, which should be all about your life.
Your life is based on decisions you make
judged by a code of right behaviour that
sustains it; there’s no need, for goodness sake,
to read hundreds of books to show you what
you already know as truth and fairness plain:
to let your mind become the pastures of
opinions, past or present, there’s no gain;
if anything, you are impoverished! |
